چکیده

A large number of applications in probability, statistics, biology, mathematical physics, computer science, and many other areas rely on approximations of distributions based on limiting results as a parameter, often a sample size, tends to infinity. The best known example is surely the Central Limit Theorem (CLT), which is used to justify the normal approximation in many contexts. A companion Poisson ‘law of small numbers’ is perhaps of no lesser importance. Recently, techniques such as Stein’s method have become available that allow one to compute a bound on the error when making such approximations. Of particular interest are situations where one cannot assume independent identically distributed random variables, as in the standard CLT. In this case the bounds on the approximation depend on the sample size, and on characteristics of the dependence. The scope of applications is wide and has been rapidly growing in recent years, including molecular sequence analysis, high

Stein’s Method and its Application in Radar

In the analysis of radar signal processing, many approximations are made in order to simplify systems analysis. In the context of radar detection, environmental assumptions, such as in the modelling of clutter and noise, are often made. Similar assumptions are employed in the analysis of speckle in radar imaging systems. In addition to this, further statistical approximations of random processe...

On Stein’s method and perturbations

Stein’s (1972) method is a very general tool for assessing the quality of approximation of the distribution of a random element by another, often simpler, distribution. In applications of Stein’s method, one needs to establish a Stein identity for the approximating distribution, solve the Stein equation and estimate the behaviour of the solutions in terms of the metrics under study. For some St...

Viewpoints of Supervisors about the Problems in the Process of Dissertations for General Medicine Program Isfahan University of Medical Sciences

Introduction. To improve the quality of dissertations (as a mandatory course) in general medicine (MD) program, it is useful to know the viewpoints of supervisors about different issues and problems in their supervision process, i.e. the objectives of the course, facilitation methods for learning, problems of the practical phase, and their ideas about the course efficacy. This study explores su...

The Probabilistic Method, Random Graphs and Stein’s Method

The Probabilistic Method has been initiated by Paul Erdős [6] in order to prove the existence of certain combinatorial objects. The principle idea is to define a proper probability distribution on a class of (discrete) objects and to show that the probability of a certain property is positive. Of course this also proves that there exists such an object with this property. We will apply this app...

Stein’s method and birth-death processes

Barbour (1988) introduced a probabilistic view of Stein’s method for estimating the error in probability approximations. However, in the case of approximations by general distributions on the integers, there have been no purely probabilistic proofs of Stein bounds till this paper. Furthermore, the methods introduced here apply to a very large class of approximating distributions on the non-nega...
